CNN's Black in America
Behind the Scenes: Black and shopping in America

(CNN) -- For Atlanta native Leah Wells, it's the humiliation she remembers most.
Not long ago, Wells sent me a note, and forwarded a letter she had just mailed to Glenn Murphy, chairman and CEO of Gap Inc. The letter detailed what happened when Wells and two girlfriends decided to ditch the gym during an office lunch break and do some "power-shopping" instead. The three young women, all in their 20s, and all black, ended up detained for shoplifting.
"We were dressed professionally," Wells told me. "It was casual Friday. We had on dresses, and casual office wear. We were racially profiled. It was as simple as that."
Wells says she and her friends were detained by six Gwinnett County, Georgia, police officers for "about an hour and a half" at the entrance of an Old Navy store owned by Gap. Their crime, as Wells sees it, was being black in America.
In her letter to Murphy, Wells describes enduring "disdainful stares from the mothers and grandmothers and children entering the store." Police responded to a call from mall security about a gang of shoplifters in the store. They found no stolen merchandise on Wells or her friends. No one -- not the police, not the store managers -- bothered to apologize.
"No matter your education, your status or profession, some still only see the color of your skin," wrote Wells two months after the event.
Sad to say, but it's a common refrain from black people in this country. All of us know someone who has, or have ourselves, been stopped for no apparent reason while driving; or been searched for fitting a description.
It happened to my brother Orestes. A Harvard medical student at the time, he was visiting a friend in Brooklyn, New York, when he was stopped and searched by officers late one night. He "fit the profile" of a robbery suspect. They dumped his belongings in the street and made him lie face down. What infuriated him was that no apology ever followed when it became clear the cops got it wrong. It seemed no one felt one was owed. My brother was seething when he told me the story. It happens all the time.
And it happens across the geographic and socioeconomic spectrum -- rich, poor and in between. What surprised me most often during our production of "Black in America" were the universal stories of blacks followed or profiled. It was shocking to me.
So many parents told me of sitting down with their sons starting at 12 years old to tell them what to do if pulled over by the police so as not to get shot. I don't imagine many white parents even think such a conversation is necessary with their teenage sons.
We've spent the past 18 months trying to accurately tell the story of black people in this country, a story rarely told with the depth and fullness it requires. Black people are seen frequently as rappers and "ballers" and sometimes exceptional -- like Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. But coverage of the vast black middle class is nearly non-existent.
What's the impact of that on America? What's the impact of that on young black kids who don't see themselves in mainstream media associated with academic achievement, success, hard work? It's hard to know, but it cannot be good.
I'm the product of a white father who's Australian, and a black mother who's Cuban. They married in the United States in 1958, but had to leave their neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, because interracial marriage was illegal in that state. By the time my little brother Orestes was born in 1967-- the sixth O'Brien child -- the Supreme Court would finally change the law and lift the ban on interracial marriage. When I tell that story in speeches, older folks in the audience nod their heads while younger ones gasp. It was illegal for my parents to marry, and it wasn't all that long ago.
Black and white people need to talk about our shared history -- policies that have held some people back, opportunities that some have not sought. My sense is the time is right for this dialogue on race. With a black man running for president Americans are talking about race every day.
Leah Wells tells me she is "coming to an understanding" with Gap. When I contacted Gap myself, a spokesperson told me an internal investigation led to the firing of a manager. Later she e-mailed this statement: "We realize it's probably too late. We regret that we did not apologize for what these ladies experienced at our store, and this goes against everything we stand for as a company."
Wells has decided to not only get mad, but get active -- writing and talking about what happened to her and her friends on a day they just set out to do some shopping.
Making a change is not for the weak willed. Our documentary "Black in America" will make you proud and angry; hopeful and frustrated. Please, go out and DO something about what you're seeing and feeling. Give your money, your time, write op-eds, commit to changing the part of reality that's not good.

Wendy, Wendy, Wendy...
It's On! Omarosa Calls Host 'Fake, Phony'

LOS ANGELES (July 22) - Omarosa is not sorry for sparring with Wendy Williams.
"I stand by everything I said," Omarosa told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The reality star - whose full name is Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth - appeared Monday on "The Wendy Williams Show" to promote her upcoming book but instead spent more time trading insults with radio personality-turned-talk show host Wendy Williams, who infamously engaged Whitney Houston during an interview on her radio show in 2003.

"When you're not honest with the American people, they do not respond well to you," said Omarosa, who became famous after appearing on the first season of NBC's "The Apprentice." "She should just go ask Star Jones about that. Honesty needs to be there. She's a phony. As long as she continues to be a fake and a phony, she won't be successful."

Omarosa told the AP that the show's promos and introductions for her appearance are what originally ruffled her feathers and prompted her to tell Williams that she would not be disrespected. Things got uglier when Williams grabbed Omarosa's book cover to hold it up to the camera, and Omarosa yanked it back out of Williams' hand."She snatched it out of my hand," Omarosa told the AP. "She didn't say, 'Can I see it?"'

The tussle gave way to Omarosa attacking Williams' appearance, asking her whether she had had a nose job and suggesting she shouldn't wear wigs. During the heated exchange, Williams called Omarosa a "typical angry black woman" and advised Omarosa that cosmetic injections could fix her wrinkles.

Following Omarosa's appearance, Williams told the AP she thought the unprovoked aggression was a publicity stunt and called Omarosa "a delusional, D-list, pathetic woman." Williams also said that Omarosa would not be invited back on "The Wendy Williams Show," which airs on Fox-owned stations in Los Angeles, Detroit, Dallas and New York.

Newest Beauty Treatment: Fish Pedicures
(AP) Ready for the latest in spa pampering? Prepare to dunk your tootsies in a tank of water and let tiny carp nibble away.

Fish pedicures are creating something of a splash in the D.C. area, where a northern Virginia spa has been offering them for the past four months. John Ho, who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le, said 5,000 people have taken the plunge so far.

"This is a good treatment for everyone who likes to have nice feet," Ho said.

He said he wanted to come up with something unique while finding a replacement for pedicures that use razors to scrape off dead skin. The razors have fallen out of favor with state regulators because of concerns about whether they're sanitary.

Ho was skeptical at first about the fish, which are called garra rufa but typically known as doctor fish. They were first used in Turkey and have become popular in some Asian countries.

But Ho doubted they would thrive in the warm water needed for a comfortable footbath. And he didn't know if customers would like the idea.

"I know people were a little intimidated at first," Ho said. "But I just said, 'Let's give it a shot.' "

Customers were quickly hooked.

Tracy Roberts, 33, of Rockville, Md., heard about it on a local radio show. She said it was "the best pedicure I ever had" and has spread the word to friends and co-workers.

"I'd been an athlete all my life, so I've always had calluses on my feet. This was the first time somebody got rid of my calluses completely," she said.

First time customer KaNin Reese, 32, of Washington, described the tingling sensation created by the toothless fish: "It kind of feels like your foot's asleep," she said.

The fish don't do the job alone. After 15 to 30 minutes in the tank, customers get a standard pedicure, made easier by the soft skin the doctor fish leave behind.

Ho believes his is the only salon in the country to offer the treatment, which costs $35 for 15 minutes and $50 for 30 minutes. The spa has more than 1,000 fish, with about 100 in each individual pedicure tank at any given time.

Dennis Arnold, a podiatrist who four years ago established the International Pedicure Association, said he had never heard of the treatment and doubts it will become widespread.

"I think most people would be afraid of it," he said.

Customer Patsy Fisher, 42, of Crofton, Md., admitted she was nervous as she prepared for her first fish pedicure. But her apprehension dissolved into laughter after she put her feet in the tank and the fish swarmed to her toes.

"It's a little ticklish, actually," she said.

Ho said the hot water in which the fish thrive doesn't support much plant or aquatic life, so they learned to feed on whatever food sources were available - including dead, flaking skin. They leave live skin alone because, without teeth, they can't bite it off.

In addition to offering pedicures, Ho hopes to establish a network of Doctor Fish Massage franchises and is evaluating a full-body fish treatment that, among other things, could treat psoriasis and other skin ailments.

Ho spent a year and about $40,000 getting the pedicures up and running, with a few hiccups along the way.

State regulations make no provision for regulating fish pedicures. But the county health department - which does regulate pools - required the salon to switch from a shallow, tiled communal pool that served as many as eight people to individual tanks in which the water is changed for each customer.

The communal pool also presented its own problem: At times the fish would flock to the feet of an individual with a surplus of dead skin, leaving others with a dearth of fish.

"It would sometimes be embarrassing for them but it was also really hilarious," Ho said.

RIP Sophia!
Estelle Getty has passed away.

The legendary actress died today in her Los Angeles home at 5:35 A.M.

She was 84.

While this is truly sad news, we must be comforted to know that she is in a better place now.

The Golden Girl had been very sick recently and had been fighting dementia for years.

Army seeking Caribbean recruits
The army has begun a recruitment drive in the Caribbean to boost its depleted forces, according to local media.

Representatives finished a six-week tour of the islands this month, resulting in 600 people signing up. After academic and medical tests, 186 men and women aged 17 to 24 were selected, said Radio Jamaica. Candidates are expected to arrive in Britain for training by November, it said.

The army recruiters have visited Belize; St Vincent and the Grenadines; Grenada, and St Lucia. Jamaica is said to be next on their list. (smiley)

Colonel Paul Farrar, who is involved in the recruitment campaign, told BBC Caribbean that it was more like a "preselection process". Yesterday the Ministry of Defence could not confirm details of the recruitment drive, but said the army was thinking about recruiting more people from the Caribbean.

The army accepts applicants from the Commonwealth and Ireland. According to MoD figures, there are about 12,000 foreigners serving in the British military, out of a total of 186,000

Naked passenger forces plane to land in Oklahoma City
OKLAHOMA CITY -- A naked, unruly passenger forced an American Airlines flight to make an emergency landing Friday afternoon at Will Rogers World Airport.

The man was aboard Flight 725 en route from Boston to Los Angeles when he became distraught and began running down an aisle naked, police said.

The man tried to force open an exit door when the plane was at 30,000 feet, said Sgt. Gary Knight with Oklahoma City police.

FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said members of the New England Revolution professional soccer team, who were aboard flight, helped subdue the man. The plane landed safely at 1:30 p.m., Knight said.

The plane departed for Los Angeles about an hour later.

Members of the New England Revolution were among those who grabbed the man near an exit door, FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said. Tie wraps were placed on the man, whose name was not immediately released, and he was taken off the flight in Oklahoma City and placed under mental evaluation, Johnson said.

The trouble began when a man on the flight emerged from a bathroom without his clothes on, Johnson said.

"He was asked to go back to the bathroom to put his clothes on and he did and went back to his seat and then allegedly attempted to open an aircraft emergency exit door," Johnson said.

The airplane had 151 passengers and seven crew members aboard.

Saved By The Good Word!
Bible, watermelon stop stray bullet
‘The word of God slowed the bullet so that it didn’t kill anybody’

INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis woman believes a higher power helped her and her two young great-granddaughters survive a shooting this week.

Before stray bullets from a gun battle ripped through her car, Charlotte Thompson didn’t even know what gunfire sounded like.

“I’d never heard a gunshot,” she said.

She was sitting at a red light around 7 p.m. Monday when the fight broke out.

“We heard this pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow,” Thompson said. "Then Shyann said, ‘Oh! I’m shot!’”

Her 10-year-old great granddaughter was sitting in the back seat, shot in the stomach.

“I turned around and looked and she raised up her shirt and I could see the bullet,” Thompson said. "I could see where it went in and where it went out.”

Thompson’s other great granddaughter, 13-year-old Jaelyn, was in the backseat, too — on the driver’s side.

“She was crying, too, because she thought she was shot, too,” Thompson said.

Police later showed Thompson the path the bullet took through her car. She now believes that path was guided by God.

“Came through the door, hit her, then it went to the Bible,” she said. The Bible was sitting on the seat between the two girls. “It went in here and come out here and it shredded my Sunday School book. The word of God slowed the bullet so that it didn’t kill anybody.”

A watermelon Jaelyn was holding in her lap eventually stopped the bullet.

“Right in the watermelon. Didn’t come out of the watermelon,” Thompson said. “The word of God and the Lord’s power saved. He sent the bullet into the watermelon.”

She said that both her granddaughters are OK and that eventually Shyann’s bullet wound would heal. However, she now worries about the emotional scars the girls will carry with them.

“It took away her innocence,” she said of Shyann. “You know, she trusted everybody. Now she trusts nothing and nobody.”

Tsk Tsk Jesse - You are utterly disgusted!
The Rev. Jesse Jackson used the N-word during a break in a TV interview where he criticized presidential candidate Barack Obama, Fox News confirmed Wednesday.

The longtime civil rights leader already came under fire this month for crude off-air comments he made against Obama in what he thought was a private conversation during a taping of a "Fox & Friends" news show.

In additional comments from that same conversation, first reported by the blog TVNewser, Jackson is reported to have said Obama was "talking down to black people," and referred to blacks with the N-word when he said Obama was telling them "how to behave."

Though a Fox spokesman confirmed the TVNewer's account to The Associated Press, the network declined to release the full transcript of the July 6 show and did not air the comments.

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly said the network had nothing to do with the latest on this embarrassing moment for Jackson, reports CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante.

"We're not out to get Jesse Jackson," O'Reilly said. "We're not out to embarrass him. We're not out to make him look bad."

Jackson - who is traveling in Spain - apologized in a statement Wednesday for "hurtful words" but didn't offer specifics.

"I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words. I apologize again to Senator Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, their children as well as to the American public," Jackson said in a written statement. "There really is no justification for my comments and I hope that the Obama family and the American public will forgive me. I also pray that we, as a nation, can move on to address the real issues that affect the American people."

A spokeswoman for Jackson's civil rights organization, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, said she could not confirm that Jackson used the slur.

Jackson has called on the entertainment industry, including rappers, actors and studios, to stop using the N-Word. He also urged the public to boycott purchasing DVD copies of the TV sitcom "Seinfeld" after co-star Michael Richards was taped using the word during a rant at a Los Angeles comedy club in 2006.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has joined Jackson in opposition of the word, said on CBS News' The Early Show on Thursday that he was "very disappointed" by this latest revelation.

"I think this certainly does not reflect the Reverend Jackson that we all know and love," Sharpton said. "I think that we have to be consistent. We have denounced the N-word… I think clearly all of us must strive to do in private what we profess in public. Once we take this public position we have that responsibility. I've said and many of those in other groups, NAACP and others, that we've all used it in the past. And we've got to stop it as we challenge this nation. We can't challenge others without challenging ourselves."

"I still hold Reverend Jackson in high esteem, but I certainly do not at all condone the use of the word by Reverend Jackson, myself or anyone else," he added.

My Theory - A Soon-To-Be EX-husband (or Wife) got pissed!
A husband-and-wife team of divorce lawyers were found shot to death in their bed, police said Thursday.

The bodies of 50-year-old Mark Schwartz and his 48-year-old wife, Christina-Maria Petrowski-Schwartz, were discovered in their Brooklyn home around noon on Wednesday.

The New York Post quoted police sources as saying both victims were shot in the temple. There were no signs of a forced entry. Investigators found no weapon but did recover shell casings. Police say there was no reported history of violence between the couple or at their home.

A police source told the New York Daily News that investigators were "paying particular attention to the couple's business associates" in the search for their killer or killers.

The newspaper said the couple's German shepherd was found tied up in the back yard.

"We're all wondering how someone got near these folks," neighbor Nancy Inzerill told the Daily News. "It must have been someone the dog knew. Every time you pass there, he jumps up at the door."

The couple lived in a single-family home in the Marine Park neighborhood, an area residents call "the suburbs in the city."

Message to Snitches (Scary Stuff)
A note threatening a Mexican journalist was found outside the office of a newspaper in southern Mexico on Monday, two days after someone left a severed head there.

Tabasco state Attorney General Gustavo Rosario said the letter was directed at Juan Padilla, editor of El Correo de Tabasco, which recently carried reports about migrant smuggling and kidnapping in the area.

"You are next," the note read.

The head of a man police identified as a low-level drug trafficker was found outside the offices on Saturday. Soldiers later located his body in another part of the city alongside a separate note that said, "This is what will happen to those who go around pointing fingers."

International media rights group Reporters Without Borders issued a statement Monday condemning the threats.

Media groups say Mexico is one of the world's most dangerous places to report, and journalists - especially those covering powerful drug cartels or official corruption - have been threatened, harassed, kidnapped and killed.

Also Monday, President Felipe Calderon held a previously scheduled meeting with representatives of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists to discuss ways to protect reporters.

In a statement, Calderon's office said the president agreed with the group's proposal to make all attacks on journalists federal offenses and to push for more thorough investigations.

Raleigh police looking at 911 calls in fatal wreck

Raleigh, N.C. — Raleigh police had been searching for a man believed to be drunk when he allegedly collided with another car early Saturday morning, killing a Chapel Hill teenager, according to 911 calls released Monday.

Wake County 911 received a call at about 3:21 a.m. from a woman concerned that Justin Caleb Crouse, 19, might have been drinking with friends before taking off in his car.

"There is a young gentleman who is very intoxicated about to drive from my neighborhood," the caller said. "I don't have the license plate number, but I can tell you it's a white Ford Fusion."

Less than two hours later, police said, Crouse was driving on Lynn Road near Glenwood Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle and struck another car.

Lillian "Lilli" Broox Manis, 17, and her boyfriend, Philip Iavorov Jurov, 17, of Durham, were taken to WakeMed, where Manis was pronounced dead. Jurov was listed in fair condition Monday.

Police are also looking into reports from other motorists who called 911 about someone driving erratically around the time of the wreck, including one call from four minutes before the wreck.

"It's driving down Lynn Road, doing about 90 mph and almost hit another car head-on and almost sideswiped two or three cars," the caller said. "They were headed toward Glenwood Avenue."

A third 911 call minutes later is from a cab driver reporting that she drove past the accident scene.

"There's one car overturned. And the other one – just – somebody took off, I don't know," the caller said. "There's a car that's overturned."

Crouse made his first appearance in Wake County District Court Monday on charges of felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and provisional DWI. Blood alcohol test results were pending Monday afternoon.

Also in court were the victim's parents, who said they wanted to make sure their daughter is not forgotten.

"I want to make sure he realizes what he's done," Elizabeth Manis said.

Crouse was out of jail on $50,000 bond and had no comment as he left court Monday. But Elizabeth Manis did make contact with Crouse's father.

"I turned around to him and I said, 'He killed my daughter,'" she said. "And he said, 'I'm sorry.' But you know, 'sorry' doesn't cut it."

Lilli Manis was a 2008 graduate of Chapel Hill High School and planned to attend Earlham College in Indiana this fall, her parents said.

A memorial service is tentatively planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting, 531 Raleigh Road, Chapel Hill.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It still baffles me why people continue to drive in those conditions KNOWING how it tears families and everyone involved apart.
Two lives OVER senselessly.
Condolences to the family and may she RIP.
Weird question, but here goes...
Did any of you ladies notice that your belly (and other parts of your body) become hairy/more hairy during pregnancy? If so, do you believe or have you heard that the amount of hair that grows determines the sex of the baby? I am hearing all kinds of stories/old wives tales about how hair growth has to do with whether you are having a boy or a girl.
All For a Tank of Gas
Fla. Dad Trades Naming Of Baby For Gas Card
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ― Someday, when a boy named "Dixon and Willoughby Partin" asks how he got his 24-letter name, he'll learn it came with a hundred bucks worth of gasoline.
David Partin of Orlando offered the right to name his unborn son to a local radio station that offered $100 worth of free gas to the listener with the most interesting item to trade. Radio hosts Richard Dixon and J. Willoughby took Partin's deal.
When the baby is born this winter, he will be named Dixon and Willoughby Partin, with the "and" included.
Partin's girlfriend, Samantha Bailey, tells the Orlando Sentinel that at least he will have an interesting story about how he got his name.
Dixon and Willoughby plan to hand over the card when they see the birth certificate.
More Cause for Concerns
Second near-collision at JFK in a week - July 12th 2008
A jetliner landing at Kennedy Airport Friday came within a half-mile of broadsiding another plane taking off - the second close call at JFK in a week, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
National Transportation Safety Board investigators were in Kennedy's control tower gathering information about the first harrowing incident when the latest one occurred.
"They were able to look out the windows and see for themselves what the problem was," said Barrett Byrnes, spokesman for Kennedy's air traffic controllers.
The Federation Aviation Association quickly changed takeoff and landing procedures for the airport's intersecting runways, which were involved in both incidents.
FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said Delta Flight 123 was arriving Friday when the pilot decided to abort his landing and execute a "go-around" - for a second try.
But the maneuver put the Delta flight on a course that brought it too close for comfort to Comair Flight 1520, a regional jet taking off on a perpendicular runway.
The Delta Boeing 757 and the Comair Bombardier CRJ9 came within 600 feet of each other vertically and a half-mile horizontally Friday, the FAA said.
Brown said the adjustments to the timing on takeoffs and landings are designed to ensure "that aircraft of one runway clear out of the path of the other runway."
"We've had two events recently, and I think we want to make sure the appropriate safety margins are in place," she said.
Last Saturday, a Cayman Airways pilot decided to abort a landing at Kennedy and fly around the airport again as an LAN Chile jet was taking off.
Their flight paths crossed, reportedly bringing the planes within about 200 feet of each other vertically and a half-mile horizontally.
The FAA and both airlines denied there almost was a collision.
Brown said the agency doesn't consider either incident a "near-collision" because there was no violation of standards for how apart planes can fly.
But Byrnes called Brown's statement "irresponsible," saying the safety standard is "1,000 feet of vertical separation or three to five miles horizontal separation."
He called the new runway procedures "wonderful even though they're late. We've been trying to change them since the mid-1990s."
Passing of the Lemonade Lady
Greetings! Every now and then I hear of the passing of someone who many of you may know and I try to advise you. Most of the time, I do not know the person personally and sometimes I do not get enough information to avoid you asking me for more - so I wait, sometimes until it appears too late. I just try my best. If you have information you want me to pass on, please try to give me as much information as possible.
Recently I heard of the passing of Shirley Chavannes Hoy which occured on or around July 2, 2008, in Belize City at the age of 83. Here is how I received it from my friend Jenny - it is an interesting anecdote, which I share also. Shirley's family were the Chavannes Lemonade Empire located on Albert St. That lemonade factory remained strong until the taste of Belizeans was conquered by Coke and other American sodas. When I tell my kids that we used to call all bottled sodas "lemonade" or in creole lomonade, they LOL.....it did not matter what flavor it was, it was still lemonade.
Shirley had her beauty shop for years and years inside her home on Cemetery Rd. and I was one of her customers while going to high school and living in Belize before emigrating. One of her sons, Arthur Hoy, is a pilot for the commuter airlines in Belize.
She was truly, truly, a lady in the true meaning of the word and a beautiful personality. Her daughter, Lorraine, said that she died from lung cancer which was diagnosed in January of this year and in the last two weeks her mother's body disintegrated into just a frame and with a ugly, ugly hacking uncontrollable cough and how it was heartbreaking to see her that way.
Sad......
Let's all pray for our dearly departed.
Tipsy Cake
TIPSY CAKE
Ingredients
1 pound cake sliced or 1 pkg. yellow Duncan Hines cake mix, cooked in 2 layers
3 small or 2 (8 oz.) bottles maraschino cherries or 2 cans fruit cocktail (drain, but save the juice)
Peach slices
Egg custard (homemade or store bought) or 1 pkg. vanilla instant pudding mix, made with 2 1/3 cups whole milk
1 pt. whipping cream or 1 lg. pkg. Cool Whip
1 tbsp. (or as much as you like) or good Rum
Method
Mix juice from cherries or fruit cocktail with some rum.
Layer slices of cake in deep dish or bowl and cover with one half of rummy juice from fruit. Mix Cool Whip or whipped cream and some rum. Spread rummy cream over first layer of cake; add layer of fruit, then custard. Repeat for the second layer. Create as many layers as you like, but do at least 2 layers. The very top layer should be cream; decorate with peach slices. Cover with foil and let stand overnight in refrigerator or for a few hours in your freezer before serving.
Caution Statement:
Now you know why it's called Tipsy Cake.
Do not eat this cake and drive!
Jackson apologizes for comments on Obama
Civil rights leader 'very sorry' for crude aside made before interview
NBC News and news services
updated 9:11 p.m. ET July 9, 2008
CHICAGO - The Rev. Jesse Jackson apologized Wednesday for "regretfully crude" comments he made about Barack Obama's speeches in black churches, during what he thought was a private conversation.
Fox News broadcast Jackson’s remarks on "The O’Reilly Factor" Wednesday night. Jackson, speaking to Reid Tuckson, an executive vice president at United Health Group, as both men were about to be interviewed on "Fox & Friends" on Sunday, criticized Obama and said, "I wanna cut his n--- off."
"He's talking down to black people," Jackson told Tuckson.
Say it aint so Granny and Grampa!!!!
WEDNESDAY, July 9 (HealthDay News) -- When it comes to sex, grandma and grandpa are having more of it these days, new Swedish research suggests.
CHICAGO - More 70-year-olds are having good sex more often, Swedish researchers said on Tuesday in a finding bound to bring a smile to many an aging baby boomer.
They found 70-year-olds of both sexes are having more sex than they did 30 years ago, and many more women report being satisfied with their sex lives.
"Attitudes are more open-minded and positive today, at least in the elderly themselves," said Nils Beckman of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, whose study appears in the British Medical Journal.
Beckman and colleagues interviewed four groups of 70-year-olds in Sweden about their sex lives between 1971 and 2001. They found that 68 percent of married men said they were having sex in 2001, up from 52 percent in the early '70s.
The number of married women having sex rose to 54 percent in the group interviewed in 2000-2001, up from 30 percent in the early 70s.
